FORT WASHINGTON -- Under the bright lights at Carey Stadium, Germantown Academy's field hockey team made history on Sept. 5, 2024, by winning their first-ever home night game. The Patriots delivered a dominant performance against Cardinal O'Hara, securing a 4-0 victory. The night was particularly special for Head Coach Diane Campbell, who earned her first win at the helm of the program.
Cece Durkin '27 was unstoppable for the Patriots, scoring three goals and leading the offensive charge. After a scoreless first quarter, Durkin found the back of the net twice in the second quarter, giving GA a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Patriots continued to control the game after the break, with Genevieve Gajan '27 adding a goal in the third period, and Durkin completing her hat-trick in the fourth quarter to seal the victory in style. Wynne Campbell '28 picked up the first shutout of her varsity career.
"Things felt right," Durkin said. "I think we really came together, I'm really proud of us and happy with the outcome. I think it's a great sign of things to come."
The win comes just one day after the Patriots fell, 2-1, to Mount St. Joseph's, the No. 19 team in PA. Durkin said that despite that loss, the team felt confident and strong about their performance, which helped them leave everything on the field against O'Hara.
Germantown Academy returns to action on Sept. 9 when they host Academy of the New Church at 3:30pm.
